foxes and coyotes

sunday April 10

Since I am now "over" the squirrels, I have a new wild life observational project (doesn't that sound better than obsession?)

Last week around 7 am I saw an animal in the backyard.......not a dog or small deer....I figured it was a fox, but not sure. (what else could it be?)

Yesterday at 7 am I was ready to take a picture and so VERY QUIETLY I opened the deck door and of course the animal (like squirrels ...smarter than me) ran and now I was sure NOW that it wasn't a fox but instead a coyote. Looked it up and yes, there are coyotes in Montgomery Cty and yes seen in Rockville.

SO this morning I decided to go on the deck earlier, 6:45 , VERY QUIETLY, slide the door open and from under the deck out dashes a FOX !!!! a real reddish brown bushy tailed FOX !!!!! (I'm positive)

Tomorrow I'll be ready at 6:30.

  1. Yes, coyotes and foxes have adapted to living with us humans, even in NYC. Small dogs, domestic cats, and the other "wildlife" that live in our yards make tasty meals for them. Plus, coyotes and foxes love many veggies and berries that us backyard gardeners provide. Go figure!
Good luck getting that picture--their senses outpace ours greatly. How about a wildlife camera? I bet you'd enjoy seeing who is prowling in your yard at night, too!

  2. I've seen lots of foxes in the field behind my house as well as occasionaly running down the middle of the street. My favorite sighting was a few years back, after a big snow storm, I saw a red ball being batted about in the field behind the house. Knowing that even walking on snow might scare them away, I took a video of two foxes playing with a big red ball in the snow, the only downside is that I had to shoot the video through a screen
