I have had a very interesting learning experience over the last 10 days .....I have started yet another PD drug. Its supposed to minimize dystonia ( involuntary movements) and other PD symptoms ......there are many. Mine includes losing balance, trouble getting my legs to go forward, not sleeping peacefully, nighttime trips to the bathroom, short term memory loss (did I just take that pill?) , some OCD, anxiety and the list goes on.
Fortunately (not really) some of these issues are age related .I know because my friends of a similar age say the SAME THING !!!
But since I am on a new med my neurologist made me promise to use my walker at all times, in and out of the house, until I become accustomed to it. And this is where I experienced things I had never paid attention to. I have many different walkers, one for each floor, one for the car, and one for walking outside. Now I will pay attention to where I am going, such as a mall, and where their elevators are located. Montgomery Mall has elevators at far ends of the mall, very inconvenient for anyone with wheels. I remember when the mall had an elevator right in the middle of the center.
Another thing I learned is walking with a walker in the neighborhood is tricky. Streets and sidewalks are uneven, and the curbs do not always have a safe way to get up or down.I never noticed that when I walked without a walker.
I'm not trying to complain but I have certainly are more aware of the numerous challenges for those who need wheels to get around. Before now I didn't think about it even though my mother used a walker and wheelchair because it wasn't ME.
Happy 2019 !!! and of course WHATEVER !!!!!!

I believe the Montgomery county office regarding citizens with disabilities would benefit from your safe advice. Walkability in one's own community including convenient elevators could be addressed.
ReplyDeleteBTW don't take a poll regarding night time issues, the "yes" boxes would be checked by most of your fan club!!😊
sage advice**
ReplyDeleteDiane, dear God what is your new med ? Meanwhile, finally on myMedStart.org I had an appt. with an edocronologist She said my Vit D was al most beyond repair , that my osteoporosis is worse ! My reaction to the flu shot was because of very low Vit. D. She kept yelling at me to " have meat to build muscle " according to research in Canada. She objects to my VEGAN diet. I did not argue with her. Most people don;t know a lot of protein is in fruits and vegetables. Most VEGAN people also know that things like, lentels, humus, beans brown rice, have a lot of protein equal to meat. Because of my swallowing I said to her I can't eat meat etc. So, she suggested to blend meat in a blender. Okay this might work. However, I can eat scramled eggs with some sort of easy substance that will slide down my throat Butter increases my mucus and saliva ) so other than catsup. I don't know. However, I been making tuna salad with pasta and tomato sauce. She still thinks eggs have little protein etc. So on my sheet that ends my meeting with her she says 1. I have malnutrition and must eat " meet " Meanwhile I must get a blood test very extensive and a bone density exam. Meanwhile Ihave pain on the left side of my body. So my primary Dr. is sending me to get an ultra sound. To top it all, tommorrow I get another tooth extracted. Well, the good news Diane I least I don't have to take the injection Reclast. My oral surgeon says , I will have oestocroniss.( decreasing of the jaw ) He gave me papers to give to the Endo Dr. However, we never got to talk about this. I am sure she means well. I will do as she says , However I will contact another professional as to what to eat etc. So, that;s a bit of an update. Please be well diane and don't forget to tell me the new drug you are on. Thanks, Diane. Your friend, Pam at pamcota24@gmail.com.
